When Ryan Marquiss was born with his heart outside of his body, doctors didn’t expect him to survive. It is an incredibly rare condition and usually babies are stillborn or die within three days. His heart also hadn’t developed and so he only had half a heart - a combination of defectswhich is so rare that Ryan is the only one of his kind in the world.
Doctors advised his devastated parents to terminate the pregnancy when his mother was just 12 weeks pregnant, but they bravely refused. And it is a gamble that has paid off, as Ryan is just about to celebrate his third birthday. Mrs Marquiss, 34, said: ‘We wanted to let nature take its course, so we refused to have the termination. ‘We knew it would be a miracle if he survived the birth but we were unwilling to take matters into our own hands. ‘The doctors told us that no baby with Ryan’s combination of defects had ever survived, so the fact that he is here with us today, is just amazing. He really has astounded everyone.’ Doctors discovered the problem at 12 weeks into his mother’s pregnancy. The incredibly rare defect, ectopia cordis, affects only eight in every million births and ninety percent of these are stillborn or die within three days. And adding to that Ryan was also suffering from hypoplastic right heart syndrome, where only the left side of the heart has developed properly. Mrs Marquiss, who lives with husband Henry, 34, and their other children Natalie, seven, and Ainsley, five, in Pennsylvania, USA, said: ‘All the odds were stacked against him. We knew that it was a miracle that he had been born alive with his heart outside his body, but then to have another life-threatening condition of only having half a heart meant that everything was against him surviving.’ Doctors at the Children’s National Medical Centre in Washington delivered him at the end of February 2009 by caesarian, helped by a team of 30 medical professionals. Dr Mary Donofrio, Director of the fetal heart programme at the Children’s National Medical Centre said: ‘If he survived the birth his exposed heart likely would become infected and kill him. Even if infection didn’t happen his heart had one working ventricle and he would require open heart surgery to rewire the blood flow through it. ‘I told the family right from the start that if he survived, it was a miracle.’ FANS PANIC OVER MAJEK’S STATE
‘With the level of creativity embedded in him, I thought Majek would be an international legend by now’ – Orits Wiliki
‘He is the greatest reggae artist Nigeria has ever known. Sad to see him like this’.
‘It’s a pity what Majek has gone through. If not for the drug addiction he would have been on another level’.
‘Majek, I love you die, you are too much man. Miss you.’
‘Ohh, majek, the rain maker, I remember his show in Owerri sports stadium 1988, it was exhilarating, love you man’.
‘See what drugs can do to you. He is in a very sorry state’.
These and many more ‘tributes’, coming from a cross section of Nigerians are not to be mistaken for condolences for a dead man, for Majekodunmi Fasheke, or Majek Fashek to many, is very much alive and well, although how well remains a subject of controversy, bearing in mind his ghost-like physical appearance and doubtful psychological state. Looking gaunt, dishevelled, unkempt and apparently under-fed, the musician, who achieved fame in the 80’s and 90’s with hits such as ‘send down the rain’, appears drought-stricken in more than one area of his life.
Majek Fashek, at one point, was arguably the biggest reggae export Nigeria had ever produced. Touted as a potential replacement for the late reggae legend Bob Marley during his burgeoning years, owing to similarities in voice pitch, Fashek achieved the rare distinction of being counted as one of the continents’ greatest musicians, a fact cemented by his 1991 signing with International music label, Interscope Records.
The label, which had big names on its list, including rap legend, 2pac Shakur, were probably swayed by his charismatic and high octane energy performances on his songs, and were instrumental in bringing him to the limelight, leading to him being featured on the famous David Letterman show the following year. 1992 also saw him release his internationally critically acclaimed break-out album ‘Spirit of Love’, which led many to assume that he was on the path to musical greatness.
However, the rain maker’s career dwindled almost irrecoverably by the mid to late 90’s owing to what some referred to as Fashek’s penchant for living life on the fast lane. Allegedly, the habitual use of ‘recreational drugs’ including alcohol, cocaine and heroin, led to his present state. Efforts to rehabilitate him, from the government of Edo state as well as public spirited individuals such as Charles Novia, didn’t succeed.
However, there are still efforts by some, especially friends, to revamp the musician’s career and rehabilitate him. Hopefully, Fashek may yet prove he still has one more trick up his sleeve to fan musical flickers to flames, before bowing out gracefully.

WHY BOBBY BROWN LEFT WHITNEY HOUSTON’S FUNERAL
Just 15 minutes into Whitney Houston’s funeral service held at the New Hope Baptist Church, Newark, on February 18, 2012, the late singer’s ex husband Bobby Brown was seen fuming, exiting the church premises.
Apparently the 43-year-old singer had gotten into a little seating dispute after he and his family were asked by security to move more than thrice in the church. Brown had brought nine people to the funeral service. His invite only allowed him to bring three people into the church. Reports also say Brown tried sitting next to his daughterBobbi Kristina but Whitney’s family was having none of that.
He (Bobby) released a statement shortly afterwards;
‘My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move. Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honour Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how’, Brown’s statement read.
It was however reported that Bobby Brown was not asked to leave the church but left on his own accord.
‘He showed nothing but love and respect for Whitney. I wish people would leave Bobby alone‘, Rev. Al Sharpton spoke of the incident.
The service continued with the likes of Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder giving performance tributes. Others who spoke at the funeral service include Kevin Costnar, Tyler Perry and R Kelly. Rev. Jesse Jackson, Mary J Blige were also in attendance.
